Thursday, August 28, 2008 15:41 [IST]

New Delhi: As the world debates on measures to counter global warming, two young school students who recently won the title of "Indian Climate Champion" are all set to embark on an arctic voyage to study more about climate change.

Chennai girl Shruti K N along with Dhruv S from Lucknow, both Class XII students, will be part of an international group of high school students taking part in the "Cape Farewell Youth Expedition 2008".

Both Shruti and Dhruv, who were selected after a nation wide competition organised by the British Council, which involved powerpoint presentations to video making, will leave for Canada on August 30 from where they will finally sail to the Arctic.

Cape Farewell youth expedition is an international project about climate change bringing together top scientists, artists, educators and high school students from around the world and from each Canadian province and territory on an Arctic voyage of discovery.

Both the students will board the M V Akademik Shokalskiy in Reykjavik, Iceland, on September 7,skirt the southern tip of Greenland and disembark in Iqaluit, Baffin Island, Canada, on September 20.

Shruti, a confessed "chocoholic", believes that saving the planet is everyone s responsibility.

Dhruv who has even set up a climate change issue-based blog in his name with the title "Dont be a Chicken" is a die hard climate boy, says Ujwala, mother of Dhruv.

He has also conducted seminars for students and teachers on the subject. Dhruv is currently interested in trying to discover ways to reduce the carbon footprint of an area.

"It is a proud moment for me. He along with Shruti were adjudged Indian Climate Champions. Based on this, they were selected for this trip," said Dhruv s mother.
