10 killed in Pakistan artillery attack
Tuesday, September 02, 2008 00:33 [IST]

Islamabad: At least 10 people, including women and children, were killed Monday when artillery fire by security forces hit a house in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal region, the News Network International news agency reported.

The incident occurred in the Enayat Qila town of Bajaur. Most of the dead were from the same family, the report said. However, the state-run Pakistan Television put the toll at eight. No further details were immediately available. Rehman Malik, interior advisor to prime minister, announced last week that military operations against militants would be halted temporarily starting Tuesday in view of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

The security forces have been engaged in operations against the militants in Bajaur as well as in the country's northwestern Swat valley.
