Thursday, September 04, 2008 16:00 [IST]

Shenyang (China): Twenty-four people were killed and six injured Thursday morning in a gas explosion at a coal mine in Fuxin in northeast China, according to local authorities.

Rescuers were searching for three miners trapped in the mine in Qinghe district of Liaoning province. An investigation into the cause of explosion was underway, sources said.

The explosion took place at 9 a.m. when 41 miners were working in the mine. Fourteen miners managed to come to the surface on their own, sources said.

The mine had begun operation in 1999 and has an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes.
