Coal mine explosion kills 27 in China
Thursday, September 04, 2008 20:01 [IST]
Beijing:At least 27 people were killed and six others injured when a gas explosion ripped through a coal mine today in northeast China, officials said.

The explosion occurred when 41 miners were working in the mine in Fuxin in Liaoning Province.

Six of the 14 survivors were injured and hospitalised.

Senior officials have rushed to the accident site and a probe has been launched, Xinhua news agency reported.

Nearly 3,800 people died in coal mines accidents in China last year although independent monitors say the real figure was likely far higher as many accidents were covered up.
