Kozhikode:Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government has no moral authority to continue in power and accused it of misleading the people and parliament on the India-US nuclear deal.
"The government kept the entire country in the dark about the contents of the deal," he said.
Addressing a seminar, Yechuri said the details of the letter the US State Department sent to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which was published by Washington Post Wednesday, clearly points to the fact that the nuclear deal violated every assurance given by the prime minister to parliament.
He said in the context of the publication of the letter, the government would have to convene parliament and the prime minister would have to answer what had happened to the assurances he had given on the floor of the house.
"We will be going to the president of India to ask her to exercise her constitutional right to summon the houses of parliament to discuss this issue. We can't allow India's interest and sovereignty to be mortgaged," he said.
Yechuri said that through the nuclear deal the US is becoming successful in drawing India into a regime which is more stringent than the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
