Buddhadeb at Raj Bhavan to meet Mamata over Nano
Sunday, September 07, 2008 18:23 [IST]

Kolkata:In a major development, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee came to visit Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee at the Raj Bhavan here late Sunday afternoon to find a solution to the controversial Nano project in Singur.

This is the first time that the two are meeting over the row over the acquisition of agricultural land for the Rs.1,500-crore (Rs.15-billion or $25-million) Tata Motors project to roll out Nano, the world cheapest car.

Banerjee, who is spearheading an indefinite sit-in since Aug 24 close to the Tata Motors Singur plant, arrived at Raj Bhavan, Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhis official residence, at 2.30 p.m. On an invitation to participate in peace talks.

"I want to inform you that the discussions have been constructive. It is my understanding that the government has agreed to consider the (alternate) land proposal inside and outside the project site. So I request you to join the discussions," Banerjee said in Singur in the morning, quoting from the governors letter inviting her for talks.
