Lankan air force targets LTTE base

Colombo:At least seven LTTE cadres and three soldiers were killed in running battles in the restive northern Sri Lanka as fighter jets attacked LTTE positions in the rebel stronghold, officials said today.

Sri Lankan Air Force fighter jets continuedto target LTTE targets with "precision", as latest reports confirmed another air strike at an LTTE position, East of Nachchikudha, Kilinochchi today, an Air Force official said.

"The air strikes were made in support of the advancing 58 Division troops, operating in the Western Wanni battlefront," Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said.

In ground clashes one LTTE cadre was gunned down during a confrontation at Palamodei North in Vavuniya yesterday, while two soldiers lost their lives on Friday, the Media Centre for National Security(MCNS) said.

The confrontation also led to injuries to two rebels and a soldier.

Separately,army troops killed four tiger militants in two different confrontations in Palamodei north yesterday, the MCNS said.

While one security forces personnel was killed in Kalwelikulam in Vavuniya yesterday,another army man was injured in an Anti-personnel Mine explosion in Kiriibbanwewa in Welioya the same day.

In another confrontation, army troops killed two LTTE cadres in Kiriibbanwewa north last morning, the military said.
