UP jails lodges largest number of illiterates

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh has earned a unique profile by lodging the largest number of illiterate, graduate and post graduate inmates in its prisons.

This was revealed in the latest report on the status of prisons in the country prepared by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

According to the data for 2006,Uttar Pradesh jails have 3,380 graduate convicts and undertrials and 1,297 post graduates inmates.

The number of illiterates is a whopping 29,524, including 23,087 undertrials, in UP jails in 2006.

Madhya Pradesh was second to UP in the number of post graduate inmates (394) while Punjab was second in the number of graduate inmates (1,447).

Interestingly, none of the 33 convicts who were lodged in Manipur jails were illiterate. Thirty of them studied up to Class X while two were graduates.

Out of the over 1.16 lakh convicts lodged in jails across the country, 36,337 were illiterate, 52,932 studied up to Class X and 19,368 were below graduates.

Among the undertrials, 93,313 were illiterate, 1,03,548 studied up to Class X and 9,559 were below graduates.

Classification of convicts professing different faiths revealed that 86,506 (74.1 per cent) adhered to Hindu religion while 20,621 were from Muslim community.

The analysis also showed that 39,010 inmates belonged to general category while 32,801 belonged to OBCs, 24,454 SCs and 17,961 STs.

Deaths in prisons have also shown an increasing trend with the jails in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar recording the highest number of such incidents.
