Jyoti Basu may undergo 'very minor operation'
Tuesday, September 09, 2008 15:18 [IST]

Kolkata: Former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, who sustained a head injury after a fall at home Friday, may have to undergo a "very minor operation" to remove a blood clot in his head, a spokesperson of the nursing home where the veteran Marxist is being treated said here Tuesday.

A CT scan performed Monday night on Basu revealed there has been no appreciable change in the blood clot in his head.

"We performed a CT scan of brain on Basu Monday night. There has been no appreciable change in the blood clot in his head. The clot may require to be evacuated through a very minor operation taking into consideration the various other factors including his cardiac and neurological status," AMRI Hospitals vice-president S. Upadhyay told IANS.

"But I must emphasise that if at all the operation is done, it will be a very minor one, and there is no cause for concern," Upadhyay said.

Other than the clot Basu is keeping well, he said.

"Basu's health conditions are all right. He is on normal diet. We are constantly monitoring his cardiac and neurological conditions."

Upadhyay added that the 10-member medical board formed to treat the 94-year-old leader will have another round of meetings Wednesday noon to discuss Basu's health conditions and the next course of treatment.

The veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader had suffered "internal haemorrhage in the head" due to a fall in his Salt Lake residence early Friday.

On Saturday, Basu underwent a CT scan and was advised hospitalisation. He had earlier received stitches on the forehead after the fall.

Basu was the West Bengal chief minister from 1977 to 2000
