CPI(M) opposes holding elections in J&K
Tuesday, September 09, 2008 15:45 [IST]

SRINAGAR: Opposing holding of elections in present conditions, Jammu and Kashmir unit of CPI(M) on Tuesday said elections would not yield results for which they are to be held.

"Let me reiterate that CPI(M) is of the opinion that unless conditions on the ground improve, unless faith of electorate is restored in the process, unless specific problems, issues and concerns of general public are addressed, rushing with elections will not yield the results for which they are to be held," CPI(M) State secretary M Y Tarigami said.

Accusing media of distorting the opinion expressed by a party representative after a meeting with the Election Commission yesterday, Tarigami said, "The fact is that in the meeting CPI(M) has stressed that a conducive atmosphere for free and fair elections be created before embarking on holding polls in the state."
