New Delhi: Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir will take place “on time”, the Election Commission spokesman said Thursday.

The spokesman said the poll panel would not want to wait for the delimitation exercise to be completed in the state because that would take time.

The last elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in September-October 2002. A fresh election is due by November this year.

“We can't wait for delimitation because it would take a year or more than that. It is a very difficult task,” the spokesman told IANS.

Jammu and Kashmir came under Governor's Rule in July after Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad stepped down following the withdrawal of support to his government by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Election Commission has already held meetings with national and regional political parties regarding elections in the state. They have also met civil officials and heads of security forces.
