BSP leader, supporters attack policemen, booked
Friday, September 12, 2008 15:05 [IST]

Lucknow: A leader of Uttar Pradesh's ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) along with 12 of his supporters have been booked for attacking policemen and attempting to release two criminals from a police lock-up in Kannauj district of the state, the police said Friday.

"Subash Dohre, a BSP leader, and his supporters barged into the police station Thursday night and attempted to release two thieves," the station house officer (SHO), Jitendra Singh told IANS.

The thieves - Kallu and Nanhe, who worked for Dohre - were arrested Wednesday night for stealing valuables worth Rs.85,000 from a jewellery shop, the police said.

"In their attempt to release the duo, Dohre and his aides also pelted stones at police officials in which two of our policemen received head injuries," Singh said.

"As the number of BSP supporters was far more than the policemen deployed at the police station, we called up a nearby police station for additional security," Singh added.

"Sensing that they would be arrested after the arrival of the additional security force, Dohre and his supporters managed to escape. They could not release the thieves," he said.
