New Delhi: The 19-year-old son of a Delhi-based industrialist was arrested Friday -- but later given bail -- for critically injuring two people when he in an inebriated state rammed his BMW car into a motorcycle and fled the scene.
Utsav Bhasin was arrested from ISBT at Kashmiri Gate early Friday morning while trying to flee to Chandigarh. He was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a medical examination and was interrogated at length about the accident.
Police said the car was speeding and Bhasin drove recklessly under the influence of alcohol. He holds a valid driving licence.
He was later let off on two bail sureties of Rs.20,000 each from the Lajpat Nagar police station, where a case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt and endangering life) was registered against him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Delhi) H.G.S. Dhaliwal said Bhasin was driving his friend back home in the BMW car, bearing a VIP registration plate from Haryana, from a party in a restaurant of Greater Kailash-II when he hit the two bike-riders from behind near Moolchand flyover early Thursday.
The victims - Mrigank Srivastav, 29, and Anuj Singh, 25 - were returning to their rented house in South Extension after a late night movie show. After hitting the victims, Bhasin lost control of the car that climbed onto the pavement following the accident.
Srivastva, who was riding his Pulsar bike landed on his head, fractured his right leg and was badly bruised all over. He was scheduled to undergo ankle surgery Friday evening. His friend Anuj, whose cervical spine and brain stem were badly damaged, was placed on life support machines Friday morning after his health deteriorated further.
After the accident, Bhasin and his woman friend tried to flee the accident spot in their car. But they had to abandon the vehicle as it was damaged in the front and the rear and its windowpanes were broken. After 200 metres, the car developed a snag and they had to abandon it near a petrol pump.
An auto rickshaw driver, who saw both abandoning the damaged car, informed a Police Control Room (PCR) van on night patrolling.
The PCR van rushed both the victims to the Trauma Centre of All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad, is pursuing his post graduation in animation from a private institute while Srivastav worked with a private television channel. Both were aspiring film directors.
?Bhasin, resident of west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh who had studied from Delhi Public School, fled to Chandigarh soon after the accident but returned the very same day. He was again planning to go to Chandigarh when we caught him from the ISBT,? said an investigating police officer.
?Bhasin has been identified by the auto-rickshaw driver and we would also confront him with Srivastav to confirm the identity of the driver,? the officer added.
The car was registered in the name of Golden Rolls Private Limited of Sonepat owned by industrialist Narendra Kumar Bhasin, father of the accused. Narendra Kumar is said to be in China for business.
