Shimla: A retired senior tourism official of the Himachal Pradesh government was arrested Friday for allegedly tampering with his service records to show that his age was four years less than his actual age, a police official said.
The police arrested Ramesh Kapoor, former general manager of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC), from Shimla town after a court refused to grant him bail.
"An FIR (first information report) under sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against the retired official for forgery and causing loss of lakhs (millions) of rupees to the government in terms of emoluments, salary and other benefits," R.M. Sharma, Shimla's superintendent of police, told IANS.
He said the FIR included the name of a senior bureaucrat, Tarun Shridhar, who was the managing director of the HPTDC when Kapoor was working under him.
"The police are investigating the role of the bureaucrat in giving favours and not taking action against the accused," said Sharma.
Shridhar is presently on deputation with the central government.
As per the police investigations, Kapoor's date of birth in school records is Feb 2, 1944, while his service record mentioned the year 1948.
"The tourism department has calculated that by tampering the service records, Kapoor managed to get excess emoluments worth Rs.800,000," said an official, requesting anonymity.
