POTA was a failed law: Rahul Gandhi
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 14:56 [IST]

Jalandhar (Punjab): Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi Wednesday took on those demanding strong anti-terror legislation in India, saying in the past POTA had failed to prevent such attacks.

Addressing mediapersons in this Punjab city on the last day of his three-day trip to the state, Gandhi said though there was need for a strong mechanism to deal with increasing terrorism in the country, laws like the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) were of no use.

"The parliament attack and the Kandahar hijacking took place when POTA was there. Was the law able to stop such and other terrorist activities?" Gandhi questioned.

India has recently seen a string of bomb blasts this year in cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Bangalore, killing over 130 people, and prompting calls for stringent anti-terror laws.
