CPM demands judicial inquiry into Jamia encounter
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 17:37 [IST]
New Delhi:The Delhi unit of the CPI(M) today demanded a judicial probe into the Jamia gun battle between police and suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists, saying the version given by the authorities on the operation were not "entirely credible".

While noting that it stands for strong steps to combat terrorism, the party claimed each terrorist strike is followed by indiscriminate arrests and harassment of innocent Muslims and stereotyping of the community.

"The version put out by Delhi Police is not entirely credible. Such doubts are strengthened by the fact that police encounters in the country have often turned out to be stage-managed. Only a thorough probe can put to rest all speculation, claims and counter claims," it said.

"We demand a judicial inquiry into the Jamia Nagar encounter by a judge with unimpeachable, secular and democratic credentials," the CPI(M) said.
