Batla House flat caretaker's bail plea rejected
Wednesday, September 24, 2008 21:30 [IST]

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of Abdul Rehman, the father of suspected terrorist Zia-ur-Rehman who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the serial blasts in the capital.

Abdul Rehman, caretaker of the L-18 Batla House flat where the alleged terrorists were holed up, was arrested on Sunday from south Delhis Jamia Nagar area. Five blasts in the capital on Sep 13 killed 24 people and left over 100 injured.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar refused to give any relief to Rehman, who was arrested on charges of cheating and forgery as neither the lease deed for the L-18 house where the suspected terrorists were staying or their tenant verification papers were found to be genuine.

"Investigation is still in the initial stage, whether the accused, who is the caretaker of the building and had harboured the said tenants who are alleged to be indulging in terrorist activities or it was done by the owner/complainant is yet to be ascertained. Merely because the accused alleges that he has been falsely implicated in the matter cannot make any difference as the offences alleged are of serious nature," the order stated.

"In view of the above observations, the seriousness of the offence and the alleged effects on society and the drastic consequences which have ensued, I am not inclined to grant bail," the magistrate said

He was also accused of forging the signature of the owner of the house.

Abdul Rehmans son Zia-ur-Rehman and other suspected terrorists Shakir Nishar and Shakil, who were apprehended on Sep 21,have been remanded in 14 days police custody.

Rehman was the caretaker of the L-18 Batla House flat where suspected terrorists Atif and Sajid were gunned down by Delhi Police on Friday morning.
