Lucknow: Alleging harassment of its workers by the BSP-led government in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress today submitted a memorandum to the Governor demanding release of one of its leaders arrested by police.
A Congress delegation, led by former chief minister Ram Naresh Yadav, submitted a memorandum to Governor T V Rajeswar and alleged that head of the party s right to information task force, Shailendra Singh, was "framed in a case for voicing against corruptions by the government".
Demanding Singh's immediate release, the memorandum said the Congress leader was picked up by the district police on the "directives of the state government as it had been angry with Singh over his recent moves to seek information about the crores of rupees being spent on Ambedkar Park".
"The government, which does not not want any of the corruption cases being brought to the notice of the people and wants to avoid any adverse statement by the judiciary over its action, got hold of the person who had taken the initiative to ensure transparency in governance on fake charges," the memorandum said.
The Congressmen demanded the Governor to give directives to the government to stop the practice of "harassing political adversaries".
The party's city unit workers also staged a dharna in front of the Vidhan Sabha against the arrest of Shailendra Singh. Source : PTI
