Bhubaneswar: With flood waters receeding in many areas of Orissa, the state government geared up for reconstruction work on a war footing in 19 districts.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who reviewed the situation, directed the officials concerned to complete repair work of the canals damaged in the devastating floods, officials sources said.
The government has decided to build concrete roads passing through villages at the earliest to restore and strengthen road connectivity in the affected areas spread over 19 districts, they said.
Sources said air dropping of relief materials was stopped in view of receding waters from most of the flood affected areas and the focus was now shifted to rehabilitation and reconstruction work.
In view of extensive damage caused to Kharif crops, attention should be given to the coming Rabi crops to mitigate the plight of farmers, who have been hit by the flood which claimed 68 lives. An amount of Rs 10,000 each would be provided for repair of lift irrigation points through Pani Panchayats, they said adding that speedy repair of canals would also enable the farmers to draw water for the Rabi crops.
The government has already announced sand cast subsidy at the rate of Rs 6,000 per hectare in addition, while NREGS funds will also be used for clearing sand accumulated in farmlands. At least 594 free kitchens were operating to feed the affected people, while 422 medical teams carrying medicine and and water purifiers were engaged. Steps were being taken to prevent outbreak of water borne diseases.
