City cops bust terror cells in Pune, Mohol
Friday, October 03, 2008 08:26 [IST]
MUMBAI: In what is being touted as a major investigative breakthrough, the Mumbai police's crime branch is believed to have busted several active Simi and Indian Mujahideen modules including the one that specialised in hacking WiFi connections to send emails claiming responsibility for the serial blasts in various cities across of the country.

Crime branch sleuths led by joint commissioner, crime, Rakesh Maria conducted raids in several parts of the state during the last three days and recovered several computers, laptops, jihadi literature and several other documents listing inside information about the banned Students Islamic Movement of India and Indian Mujahideen, senior police officials told DNA on Thursday.

Scores of Simi and IM hardliners have been detained and several more are being picked up from other states, including Karnataka, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the sources revealed.

The entire combing up operation is being personally supervised by city police commissioner Hassan Gafoor and a joint director level officer of the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

One of the big catches came from Kondhwa, Pune, the sources revealed.

It is also learnt that a sleeper cell may have been busted in Mohol, a communally sensitive town near Solapur.

Working on information revealed by those under detention, the crime branch has apparently unearthed modules responsible for procuring explosive materials, assembling bombs, and later planting them.

The Mumbai police are apparently confident that the men and material in their custody will help checkmate the terror modules in the country.
