Actor-politician Raj Babbar joins Congress
Monday, October 06, 2008 08:01 [IST]

Agra: Parliament member and film star Raj Babbar Sunday joined the Congress party with a number of his supporters.

Babbar joined the Congress at a rally here in the presence of senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh and state party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

In his 30-minute long speech at the BSNL grounds, Babbar called Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati "Queen Victoria who talks only with crorepatis (millionaires)".

He said Mayawati has no idea about the problems farmers of Uttar Pradesh were facing.

Babbar has represented Agra city in the Lok Sabha twice. But for the next time he may try his luck from the adjoining Fatehpur Sikri (Rural) constituency as Agra city has been declared a reserved constituency.

After quitting the Samajwadi Party, Babbar launched Jan Morcha with blessings from former prime minister V.P. Singh.

However, the lone Jan Morcha legislator, Dharam Pal Singh, defected to Uttar Pradesh's ruling Bahujan Samaj Party two months ago.

Babbar Saturday scored a major success when he managed to secure defection of powerful Jat leader Raj Kumar Chahar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Congress.
