Day two of curfew in Kashmir valley
Monday, October 06, 2008 10:49 [IST]

Srinagar: Indefinite curfew continued across Kashmir valley for the second day Monday in a bid to prevent separatists from marching in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital.

Almost all senior separatist leaders -- except hardline leader of the Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani, who is admitted in a local hospital -- were under house arrest and tension was palpable even though there had been no reports of curfew violation.

“There will be no relaxation in the curfew restrictions today. The situation is being reviewed continuously,” said a senior official.

Because of non-availability of facilities, no local newspaper could bring out its issue Monday.

Curfew had been imposed at dawn Sunday throughout the valley ahead of the proposed separatist march to Srinagar's city centre Lal Chowk.

Separatists had called for a similar march to Lal Chowk on Sep 25, but that too had been thwarted by the authorities by a preemptive curfew across the valley.

All entry points into the Jammu and Kashmir summer capital have been sealed and are being manned by the police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

“We have also taken the assistance of the Rashtriya Rifles at some places to enforce the restrictive orders,” a police officer said.
