Maoist commander gunned down in Chhattisgarh
Tuesday, October 07, 2008 13:31 [IST]

Raipur: A Maoist commander was gunned down early Tuesday by a joint team of the Chhattisgarh police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in a forest in the state's restive southern region.

The Maoist was killed after a gun battle between the security forces and the rebels in Bijapur district of the Bastar region, some 500 km south of capital Raipur.

"The combing team challenged a group of armed Maoists and a tribal commander was killed after a brief gun battle while about a dozen of his aides managed to escape into the nearby forests," District Superintendent of Police Ankit Garg told IANS.

Police seized the body of the Maoist along with four 12-bore guns and a tiffin bomb.
