Communal tension in Uttar Pradesh village
Tuesday, October 07, 2008 17:39 [IST]

Lucknow: Tension prevailed in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district Tuesday after two communities clashed following a dispute over the religious shape of a house, officials said Tuesday. Ten people have been arrested.

The clash took place late Monday in Mehrwani village.

According to police, a man was constructing his house in the shape of a mosque when some people objected to it. This led to a clash between the two communities. "Several people were injured in the clash," circle officer, city, R.S. Gautam, told IANS over phone.

An additional superintendent of police and some other policemen were also injured while trying to prevent the clash.

The police resorted to a mild cane charge and fired tear gas shells to control the situation, he added.

"We are probing the matter and will ensure strict action against those found guilty," Gautam added.
