13 officials, held on graft charge, sent to jail
Tuesday, October 07, 2008 18:52 [IST]

New Delhi: A Delhi court Tuesday sent to judicial custody 13 officials of the Delhi government, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Police who were caught on camera demanding bribes.

Link Metropolitan Magistrate Siddharth Sharma sent all the officials to judicial custody for 14 days.

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested them Monday on charges of corruption after conducting a month-long sting operation.

ACB acted on a complaint from Shiv Kumar Tiwari, a hawker in Connaught Place, last month that many officials of NDMC, labour department and police collect bribes on a monthly basis from him as 'protection money'.

The monthly collection from each shop owner varied between Rs.500 and Rs.30,000. The official said money was collected from hundreds of shops.

The court also sent two paan shop owners, alleged to be conduits for the officials, to one-day police custody.
