Singur will burn again with Mamata fire
Wednesday, October 08, 2008 09:56 [IST]
KOLKATA: The "Nano" disaster does not seem to have made any impact on the tradition of destructive politics pursued by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for years.

Taking a break during the ongoing festive season, she is planning to set Singur on fire once again by the end of this month with her old demand for the return of 300 acres from within the erstwhile project area.

However, she has additional demand this time that the West Bengal government will have to return the 300 acres in original form of fertile-three crop nature. However, experts are of the opinion that returning the land in original form is scientifically impossible as it has lost its fertility because in order to elevate the land for the project, chemicals were mixed with the soil.

State industry amp; commerce minister Nirupam Sen has made it clear once again that the land cannot be returned to the erstwhile owners as it is not permissible under the existing law.

According to Mamata, before starting the fresh agitation at Singur, she would meet president Pratibha Patil and prime minister Manmohan Singh.

Mamata has vowed to use the Singur-model as the mode of agitation in case of future land acquisitions for other industries in the state. "It is not just Tata's. In future we will resist any industrial body, which will come to acquire fertile land for industries. Our victory in Singur has encouraged farmers elsewhere in the state too," Mamata said.

She also made it clear that her next target would be Katwa in Burdwan district where the state government is planning to set up a mega thermal power plant.

Mamata is also very critical of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's recent statement that the "Nano" pullout might be defeat in one particular battle but not the defeat of the entire industrial drive. "We will continue with our battle to spearhead industrialisation drive," Bhattacharjee said.

According to Mamata, by saying such things, the chief minister in reality is declaring a battle against the farmers. "Let them criticise as much as they want. The more they will criticise us, the more the people of West Bengal will be behind us," Mamata said.
