Ahmedabad: Narendra Modi was never happier. The sparkle in his eyes and a smile on his face remained in place the whole of Tuesday when he announced, along with Rata Tata, the Nano's relocation from West Bengal to Gujarat. Even if it was a well-planned coincidence, the fact that the day also marked his completion of seven years in office only multiplied Modi's utter delight. Excerpts from the media interaction:
What are the terms for land transfer at Chharodi for the Nano project?
The 1,100 acres of land will be sold to Tata Motors at current market price.
Why is the Nano project so important for Gujarat?
Gujarat will become an industrial power once Nano rolls out from here. Gujarat is so far a hub for petrochemicals, chemicals and engineering products. The state will now emerge as a giant in the surface transport industry as well. This will change the direction and speed of Gujarat's development and the state will be part of the automobile industry that is booming across the globe. Gujarat, especially Saurashtra, is already a leader in auto parts. Believe me, Nano is a project of national spirit and not only other states of India but even other countries have been looking forward to it. This project is an immense opportunity for proding service to nation, and I am proud that Gujarat has got this opportunity. Jamshedji Tata donated Rs1,000 a century ago to help Gujarat and now his successors have come with an investment of thousands of crores of rupees.
What will be the other benefits to Gujarat?
Ratan Tata will also help the state in developing the human resources in various ways. Tata's will form an automobile academy and many ITIs for human resource development in the state. Sixty small and medium scale industries and ancillary industries will be moving in at the site with Tata Motors. The company will also start an auto academy and a driving school. The announcement by Tata that the company would contribute to agricultural research and marine biology in the state came as a pleasant surprise.
What are the tax incentives offered to the company?
Our USP is good governance and good infrastructure. I do not believe Tata is here because of financial incentives, but because Gujarat offers good industrial environment for development. I believe he also feels nostalgic about Gujarat and wants to come back and contribute to the states development.
How will Gujarats infrastructure will specially help Tata Motors in this project?
The upcoming dedicated freight corridor will immensely help in transportation of Nano cars to various parts of the country.
