Manila: A third Chinese-made milk product sold in the Philippines has tested positive for melamine, officials said today.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque said tests showed "Jolly Cow Slender High Calcium Low-fat Milk," tested positive and ordered its removal from store shelves. So far, three milk products from China out of 52 so far tested in the Philippines, have proven positive for melamine, Duque said.
Yesterday President Gloria Arroyo ordered government agencies to close any store found selling tainted milk products. Duque said China had voluntarily given the Philippines a list of 22 products which had tested positive for melamine. He could not say how many of them were distributed in the Philippines.
"There are no cases of affected children, no cases of affected adults. No one has died," in this country, Duque said.
Melamine, which is normally used to make plastics, has been found in infant milk formula, making nearly 53,000 children sick in China and killing four. In one of China's worst ever product recall scandals, countries from Asia to Europe have decided to suspend imports of Chinese milk products or to withdraw them from the market as the number of products involved grows.
