Suspect in Soumya murder case gets clean chit
Wednesday, October 08, 2008 18:06 [IST]
New Delhi: Police today gave a clean chit to a youth who had emerged as a suspect in the Soumya Viswanathan murder case after they found that the mirror of his luxury car had broken much before the TV news producer was killed at the same spot.

Mudit, the son of a businessman Dinesh Jain, had come under the police scanner after investigators collected pieces of the rear-view mirror of his BMW car from the spot where Soumya was found murdered in Vasant Kunj.

Investigations revealed that Mudit had travelled by that route at about 8:30 pm on September 29,almost seven hours before Soumya s body was found in her car.

The CCTV footage also showed the broken rear-view mirror and the timing in the CCTV also corroborated the statement given by Mudit, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal told PTI.

Soumya was found shot dead in her car in the wee hours of September 30. Initially, police thought it was a case of accident but later doctors conformed that she suffered a bullet injury on her head.

Mudit had gone to DLF mall in Nelson Mandela Road on September 29 for buying a shirt for his father on his birthday and the rear view mirror of his car broke at the spot where Soumya was murdered.

After tracking the car through BMW dealers, police zeroed in on Jain and his son. Suspicion grew on Mudit as he flew to London on the day when Soumya was murdered.

Police collected the glass pieces from the scene and recreated the frame once again. It came to light that the rear view mirror was that of a BMW Alpine 2.5-13X-SU model, a senior police official said.
