Utsav Bhasin's judicial custody extended
Friday, October 10, 2008 18:42 [IST]

New Delhi: A city court Friday extended the judicial custody of Utsav Bhasin, the 19-year-old son of a Haryana-based industrialist, whose BMW car allegedly rammed into a motorcycle, killing one rider and injuring the other.

Metropolitan Magistrate Praveen Kumar extended Utsav's custody by 14 days.

The court on Oct 6 dismissed Bhasin's bail plea, stating that investigations are in a crucial stage.

Bhasin surrendered before Delhi Police Sep 27, a day after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the Delhi High Court.

He approached the court for bail after the police slapped additional charges against him under section 304 (culpable homicide, not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Bhasin, who was allegedly drunk at the time of the accident Sep 11, now faces stringent penal provisions as the police have amended the charges against him in the first information report (FIR).

Earlier, the FIR was filed under sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt and endangering life) IPC.

Bhasin was driving his BMW car when he hit the two men on a motorcycle around 2.40 a.m. near Moolchand flyover in south Delhi.

While Anuj Singh, a BPO employee who was driving the motorbike, succumbed to his injuries a day after the accident, Mrigank Srivastava, who was riding pillion, was injured. He is recovering.
