Indefinite curfew clamped in MP town of Burhanpur
Friday, October 10, 2008 21:28 [IST]

Burhanpur (MP): Three persons were today killed in police firing in this communally sensitive town, where an indefinite curfew was clamped and shoot-at-sight order issued following arson group clashes.

Three persons were killed in police firing, Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police S K Raut told PTI. At least 15 persons, including four policemen, were injured in stone pelting, police said. Police opened fire near a place of worship to control a mob which had set afire 7-8 shops, police sources said.

The trouble began last night during a religious procession at Mandavmal Chouraha in Budhwara locality when the sound system mounted on a vehicle fell, leading to chaos in the area, police sources said. Later, people belonging to the two communities pelted stones at each other over the incident, they said.

A group belonging to the majority community allegedly set afire four houses of the people on suspicion of their involvement in the incident, they said.
