Five children killed in China crane crash

Beijing: Five children were killed and two injured when a tower crane crashed today in a kindergarten in a east Chinese province.

A roof of the kindergarten school  building at Zibo City in Shandong Province was severely damaged when the crane at a construction site collapsed on it. There were about hundred students in the kindergarten at the time of the accident, the official Xinhua news agency reported. 

Five children who were outside died after being hit by falling bricks. Two children and the crane driver were injured and were taken to hospital, according to the government information office.

Several ambulances had rushed many injured children to hospital and local police had cordoned off the area, eyewitnesses said. Initial police investigation attributed the accident to poor safety measures. Officials of the construction company had been detained, police said, without giving further details. Police and work safety officials are still investigating the accident.
