Kannur: An RSS activist was killed and another seriously injured when suspected CPI-M workers hurled crude bombs at them near Thalassery town last night, police said.
C K Anup (22) and his friend Riju (24) were trying to escape from a house which came under attack by miscreants at Komathupara around midnight when bombs were hurled at them, police said.
While Anup, who sustained multiple injuries died on way to hospital, Riju (24) had been shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College with serious injuries on his left hands, they said.
Prior to the incident, houses of both BJP and CPI-M workers came under attack at around 2200 hours, in which a CPI-M worker sustained injuries, they said.
Accusing the CPI-M of fresh violence, the BJP/RSS has called for a day-long hartal in Thalassery taluk limits. Vehicles have been kept out of the purview of hartal.
The CPI-M local leadership, refuting the RSS allegations, said the incident occurred after bombs held by the RSS workers exploded, leading to the death of the RSS activist.
Senior RSS and BJP leaders, including BJP state President P K Krishnadas visited the Thalassery Government Hospital where the body of Anup has been kept.
The leaders charged the CPI-M with unilaterally vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in politically sensitive Thalassery town.
