Sacramento: The death toll has risen to nine in the crash of a bus carrying many senior citizens and Laotian immigrants to a casino in Northern California.

UC Davis Medical Centre spokeswoman Phyllis Brown says E Vang Saelee died yesterday at the Sacramento hospital. The victim s son says he was 74.

The crash earlier killed Saelee s wife.

Eight other people died after the bus overturned Sunday with 45 people aboard. The driver remains hospitalised and is under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Many of the passengers were senior citizens and Laotian immigrants who fled to Thailand in the 1970s after the Vietnam War, then moved to the United States.
