50,000 industrial units to down shutters on oct 22
Saturday, October 11, 2008 20:39 [IST]
Coimbatore: About half a lakh industrial units, small, medium and large, in Coimbatore district would down their shutters on Oct 22,protesting against the "frequent power cuts" and the increased timings.

The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of 24 industrial and trade associations in the district last night, sources in the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) said.

The meeting also decided to take out a rally through main roads of the city on that day, the sources said.

Almost all the associations were of the opinion that the power shortage should be equally shared among all the consumers --industrial, commercial and domestic, across the State.

Production worth about rs.200 crore would be affected due to the one day closure of the industries in the distict. Besides Codissia, representatives of Indian Chamber of Commerce and industry, Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association, Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association, and Southern India Mills Association were among those participated in the meeting.

The associations would send a detailed memorandum to the State Chief Minister on the "suffering" of the industries due tothe power cut for the last 11 months, the sources said.
