New Delhi: The Delhi Police has come in the firing line of a city court which blasted it for shoddy probe into a drug trafficking case involving Afghan nationals, saying money obtained through narcotics trade was being used for funding terror in the country.
Emphasising the need for reaching the bottom of the drug trafficking cases which generally have international ramification, the court said Afghanistan is the neighbour of India and centre of narcotics trade and if the illegal trade was not stopped it will have grave consequences for the country.
"It may be mentioned that India is on the transit route for smuggling narcotics to various parts of the world. Narcotics money is often used for promoting terrorism in India.
"India has been bleeding on account of terrorism for more than a decade and if trafficking in narcotics is not stopped, it will have grave consequences for this country," Special NDPS Judge Babu Lal said sentencing three Afghan nationals to 10 years imprisonment.
Though the trial led to the conviction of the accused, the court did not hesitate to observe that the investigation was carried out in "irresponsible manner".
"Investigations show that the present case has international ramification. Apart from the accused, some high and mighty persons in India might have been involved in the case. Police have subverted the course of investigation and shut its eyes to reach the proper conclusion," the judge said suggesting the Delhi Police Commissioner to order an inquiry into the manner in which the probe was done.
