Train passengers can carry any authorised photo id
Sunday, October 12, 2008 12:48 [IST]
New Delhi: Passengers booking rail tickets online can now carry any authorised photo identity proof and not necessarily the particular one which they had specified at the time of booking the tickets.

In a move to popularise e-ticket among passengers, the Railways has decided to dispense with the existing provision of making passengers mandatory to specify at the time of booking the type of proof of identification they would carry during their journey.

The modification was circulated through an order dated October 8.

A passenger can now use voter identity card, passport, PAN card, a driving licence or photo identity cards issued by the central or state governments to get the e-tickets and then can carry any one of them during the journey.

Till now, passengers had to carry the same identity card about which they mention at the time of booking tickets. In case a passenger forgets to carry that proof, the person is considered travelling without ticket and penalised accordingly even if having other valid proof to establish one s identity.

This had become a cause of complaint and was acting as impediment in the proliferation of e-ticketing. The decision was taken after reviewing the matter.
