Mumbai stockbroker, family commit suicide

Mumbai:In an apparent case of suicide triggered by the global financial crisis, a Mumbai-based stockbroker, his wife and their two children were found dead in their flat on Sunday afternoon, a police official said.

The victims are A. K. Nair, a 77-year-old sharebroker, his wife Shyamala, 65,daughter Suchitra, 43,and son Sudhir, 42,the official from the Kasturba Marg police station said.

The bodies were found from their flat in the upscale Raheja Complex in Borivli (East), a suburb in northwest Mumbai, the official said.

The incident came to light at around 3.30 p.m.

According to preliminary investigations, it appears to be a case of mass suicide on account of financial calamities that befell the family in view of the recent crises in the stock markets, he said.

A suicide note found from the scene of the tragedy said they were taking the extreme step on their own and nobody should be held responsible for it.

While Suchitra and Sudhir, both unmarried and living with their parents, were found hanging from the ceiling fans, the bodies of the couple were found in the bedroom. The couple had taken an overdose of sleeping pills.

The bodies have been sent to the Bhagwati Hospital for an autopsy.
