Nihita changed name to Nihita Sobhraj Bishwas
Monday, October 13, 2008 12:10 [IST]

Kathmandu: The 19-year-old Nepalese girl, who claims to have married 65-year-old murder convict Charles Sobhraj inside the Central Jail here, has changed her name to Nihita-Sobhraj Bishwas from Nihita Bishwas.

According to the jail register book, Nihita identified herself as Nihita-Sobhraj Bishwas as she went to the jail to meet him yesterday, according to the jail authorities.

She came on a motorbike with two unidentified boys, met Sobhraj for 20 minutes after registering her name in the jail book.

Nihita claims that she has secretly married Sobhraj inside jail on the ninth day of Vijaya Dashami despite the jail authorities denial of the incident.

Sobhraj had exchanged engagement rings with Nihita a couple of months ago, which sparked controversy. Nihita was wearing Nepali Mangal Sutra tied to a piece of gold while visiting jail yesterday.

She was wearing the Mangal Sutra made of black beads tied to a piece of gold, which is worn only by married woman in Nepal. She was wearing white shirt, pink sweater and blue jeans pant.

Defending his move Sobhraj told journalists from inside the jail that he married her to protect her reputation. "It was to show my respect for her love and protect her reputation," Sobhraj was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post.

Sobhraj has been serving life imprisonment since he was arrested in 2003 from a Kathmandu casino on charges of murdering American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich way back in 1975.

It was an ultimate truth to materialise my love for her, Sobhraj said shortly after meeting Nihita yesterday. It is my duty to marry her as both of us have fallen in love, he said.
