New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that mass religious conversions must be checked to ensure peace and also pressed the central government to approve the states long pending anti-terror law.

"Mass religious conversions by coercion and allurement must be checked to ensure peace in the society," Modi said at the meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) here.

"Communal peace is often disturbed in the society because of such activities," he added.

Modi also sought expeditious approval of the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) bill, which has been hanging fire for more than four years.

"I once again urge the union government to expedite approval of GUJCOC," Modi said.

He also sought a national consensus to isolate "people, groups, and so-called intellectuals supporting those indulging in terror activities".

"Deterrent punishment is necessary to keep the youth away from such indoctrination," Modi added.
