Rizwanur's brother asks court to cancel bail of accused cops
Monday, October 13, 2008 20:57 [IST]

Kolkata:The brother of Rizwanur Rehman Monday appealed to the Calcutta High Court to cancel the bail of three police officers who were allegedly involved in Rizwanur s mysterious death last year. "We have appealed to the Calcutta High Court Monday for bail cancellation of former deputy commissioner of police (detective department) Ajay Kumar, former assistant commissioner Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das. The hearing will be held Thursday," Rizwanur s brother Rukbanur told reporters here. The three cops had surrendered before the Metropolitan Magistrate s court here Sep 30 and submitted their bail pleas, which were then rejected. They were sent to 14-day jail custody. However, the court Oct 1 granted them interim bail against bond of Rs.10,000 each.

Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead Sep 21 last year near the railway tracks at Kolkata s Patipukur suburb, barely a month after his inter-faith marriage with Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi. The Calcutta High court Aug 14 said Rizwanur was forced to commit suicide and asked the CBI to file charge sheets in the lower court against six people - his father-in-law Ashok Todi, Todi s brother Pradip Todi and four police officers Gyanwant Singh, Ajay Kumar, Sukanta Chakraborty and Krishnendu Das.
