Tuesday, October 14, 2008 17:29 [IST]

Kolkata: A city court Tuesday remanded an alleged Bangladeshi criminal, who was arrested Monday from his south Kolkata house, to 14-day police custody.

According to the court's verdict: "Subrata Bayen, an alleged Bangladeshi criminal, has been remanded to 14-day police custody under the Foreigner's Act".

Bayen, 39, was arrested Monday by the Special Task Force of Kolkata police with a 9-mm pistol from his house at Palm Avenue in south Kolkata, barely 800 meters from West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's residence.

"Bayen, aka Bipul and Abdul Ali, is among the Interpol's 'Most Wanted' list with charges of extortion, murder and gun-running.

"After getting bail in 1991 from Bangladesh, he came to India. He is in Kolkata for the past few years and ran an extortion racket from here. We have recovered a 9-mm pistol from him," police deputy commissioner (detective department) Jawed Shamim said.

According to police sources, Bayen has even invested in real estate in the city and at Karimpur town in Nadia district.
