Car on Prez route intercepted
Tuesday, October 14, 2008 21:31 [IST]

Pune: Police and central security agencies here have detained one person after intercepting a car with the national emblem which was moving along the route to be taken by President Pratibha Patil on Saturday last.

Sources in the police probe team said that the car -- a Maruti Swift bearing a Delhi registration number -- was intercepted by police to verify the antecedents.

However, two men in the car told the police that the lady accompanying them needed urgent medical attention, the sources said.

While senior police officials were approached for instructions, the three fled from the scene, the sources said.

The registration number was in the name of Sengupta who had left his Delhi residence two years back.

Police detained a man who resembled the driver of car on October 11, when the incident took place, 45 minutes before the Presidential convoy passed through the route. He is believed to be influential and associated with a political party.

The President, who arrived in the city on October 10, attended a series of functions in Pune district, including inauguration of the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) on Sunday, amid tight security.
