Assam bandh affects life in some parts
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 19:56 [IST]
Guwahati:Normal life was affected in some parts of Assam today in the wake of the day-long bandh call given by six tribal organisations.

The shutdown, called by the tribal organisations to demand scheduled tribe status for the tribals, affected normal life in upper Assam s Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Jorhat districts as well as in Bongaigaon district of lower Assam, official sources said.

Eight picketeers were arrested from Talap in Tinsukia when they tried to forcibly close of some shops.

Shops and business establishments in the tribal-dominated areas downed shutters while vehicular movement on the National Highway was thin, sources said.

The bandh was called by organisations belonging to the Mottock, Moran, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Adivasis and Koch Rajbonshi tribes.
