Dhaka: Authorities in the emergency-ruled Bangladesh have issued a show-cause notice against police chief N Mohammad demanding explanation of his recent comments over non-enactment of a proposed police law.
The Home Ministry officials said they have issued the notice asking him to clarify the relationship between the non- promulgation of the police law and results of the police case investigations.
A seemingly frustrated police chief last month told media that the investigations could never been conducted strongly for want of a effective police ordinance. The comments came after the powerful Anti-Corruption commission summoned him to discuss about the ineffectiveness of the police investigations against high profile graft suspects resulting in their release by courts.
The officials said they have also mentioned in the notice that the criminal cases are investigated under the criminal procedure code and it has little to do with the police ordinance.
The Daily Star newspaper quoted the Inspector General of Police as saying that he had received the notice and would reply by next week. Mohammad at that time also termed the police "a weak force" which was failing to run strong investigations into cases including those for corruptions. "To have a police department on its own, let's have the ordinance passed. But it had not been done," he said.
He also added that the police ordinance was not being amended and "it may effect the interest of some quarters". The interim government launched a massive Anti graft campaign after its installation with crucial military support following the January 11,2007 proclamation of the state of emergency.
