BJP promises more stringent law than POTA
Thursday, October 16, 2008 18:25 [IST]

Ahmedabad: Promising to bring in a "more stringent" anti-terror law than POTA if voted to power, the BJP on Thursday accused the UPA government of lacking strong political will to deal with terrorism which, it said, was the "biggest threat" faced by the country.

"We will enact a law which is more stringent than POTA to fight terrorism," BJP president Rajnath Singh said here in a reply to a question.

"The biggest threat the country is facing today is jihadi terrorism. UPA governments evasive response and lack of strong will to counter the challenges posed by different terrorists groups has created an atmosphere of insecurity and fear in the country," Singh said.

The UPA, the BJP leader alleged, "cannot see the difference between terrorism and Muslims and is treating the issue with the angle of vote-bank politics." Singh referred to the recent National Integration Council meeting in New Delhi where terrorism was kept out of the agenda.

In the wake of the recent serial blasts in Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi, the BJP has been making a strong pitch for revival of POTA, that was scrapped by UPA.

Taking exception to the governments stand on ram Sethu, Singh accused it of practicing "cultural terrorism". "It is shocking to see the government has grossly misinterpreted the Kamban Ramayana and told the Supreme Court that Lord Rama himself had destroyed the Ram Sethu," Singh said, adding it was not the first time that the UPA government had "insulted peoples belief".

"We condemn such submission made by the UPA government in the court. They are playing with the religious sentiments of more than a billion people," he said

Accusing the UPA of driving the country towards stagflation, the BJP leader said his party will revive the sagging economy if voted to power.

While the UPA "is committing blunders" on the economic front, Singh claimed the BJP governments in various states were scripting new success stories and referred to the shifting of Nano Car Project from West Bengal to Gujarat

The BJP will fight state elections based on the developmental works done by our government in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, he said.

"Terrorism, economic scenario and inflation too would be the issues," Singh, who was here to attend a party function, said.

He expressed confidence that his party will retain power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and win in Delhi in the "semi-finals" prior to Lok Sabha polls.

"We will also have substantial gains in Mizoram," the BJP chief said.

"Terrorism is a global issue and countries which became notorious for supporting terrorism in the name of Jihad are also feeling its heat now.... Pakistan has also started mobilising public opinion against terrorism," Singh said.

Singh claimed the BJP had emerged as a front-runner for the Lok Sabha elections.

"In the run up to Lok Sabha elections, BJP has emerged as a front-runner. Our leader L K Advani will become the next Prime Minister," he said.

On what role will Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi play if BJP wins the Lok Sabha polls, Singh said, "I would welcome him at any place (centre or state). He has to decide on it".
