Thursday, October 16, 2008 19:46 [IST]

Dharamsala/New Delhi:Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, who underwent gall bladder surgery at a hospital in New Delhi last week, was discharged Thursday, his aide said. "The spiritual guru was discharged from Delhi s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital after recovering from successful surgery to remove gallstones,"

Tenzin Taklha, a senior aide to the exiled leader, said in Dharamsala. The 73-year-old Nobel laureate was admitted to the hospital Oct 9 after he complained of abdominal pain. Taklha said the Buddhist leader would stay in the capital for a few days more. In August, the Dalai Lama was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai twice with abdominal discomfort. After returning to this hill station in Himachal Pradesh, he made his first public appearance after nearly one-month rest during a teaching ceremony Sep 25. The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. His government-in-exile, which is based here, is not recognised by any country.
