Sunday, October 19, 2008 07:50 [IST]

Midnapore: A student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur near here was arrested today for allegedly carrying a packet of heroin.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Kharagpur), Pranab Kumar, said, "Priyankur Biswas, a 3rd-year B Tech student of Agriculture Science, was arrested outside the main gate of IIT this afternoon and a packet containing 100 gm heroin was recovered from him."

Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap and the IIT student was arrested in a tea stall outside the campus. He was suspected to be the part of a racket dealing in the contraband substance, police said.

Kumar said Biswas has been studying in the IIT for the past 12 years and was a border of Nehru Hall hostel. A resident of Gaighata in North 24-Parganas district on Indo-Bangla border, Biswas, was asked to leave IIT after he failed in semester examination but was allowed to study following a ruling of Calcutta High Court, police said.
