Dubai: Indians form the second biggest complainant group in Qatar after Filipinos, the country's Labour Department statistics in August has revealed.
Of the total complains filed in August, 14.1 per cent were filed by Indians who were being led by Filipinos (32.1 per cent), the report said. Nepalese (14.1 per cent) and Sri Lankans (11.5 per cent) were the other major complainants.
Talking about the service sector, Construction workers top the chart of the complainants with 41.2 per cent complains being registered by them. Complaints lodged by those working in the wholesale and retail trading sector represented 10.5 per cent and the other sectors constituted 48.3 per cent of the total number recorded in the month.
However, the number of complaints received in August this year decreased by 14.3 per cent compared for the same month last year despite the fact that delay in payment of salaries and denial of flight tickets were the major problems both in August 2007 and August 2008.
As many as 79 per cent of the complaints filed by a total of 816 workers in August this year fell in these categories, monthly report released by the department showed. However, a small increase has been observed in the number of workers who filed complaints in August to those who lodged complaints in July (794) this year.
Other major grievances of the expatriate workers included disputes over overtime allowances, end-of-service benefits and leave salary. As per the report, 57.5 per cent of the total complaints received in August were settled, while 27.2 per cent were closed, 11.8 per cent have been referred to court and 3.6 per cent are being investigated.
