Sunday, October 19, 2008 12:46 [IST]

Sydney: A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit near the South Pacific archipelago of Tonga today, Australian seismologists said. The quake was shallow at a depth of 10 kilometres and hit east of the Tongan capital of Nuku alofa but so far there were no reports of injuries or damage, Geoscience Australia said.

"There's been some light shaking in Nuku alofa," seismologist Clive Collins told AFP. No tsunami alert has been issued for Australia, he added.
